Unclear It is not clear what this list is for, or whether setting CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_MODEL changes which model auto mode uses.
What
An environment variable is a named value set in your shell before you start a program. Claude Code keeps a list of environment variables that it handles together. That list includes PATH, CLAUDE_CODE_EXTRA_BODY and CLAUDE_CODE_HOST_CREDS_FILE, and now also includes CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_MODEL. The variable name already existed, and Claude Code now refers to it in more places than before.
Why
The name suggests the model used by auto mode may be settable through this variable. That is not confirmed here.
The entry above is what we published on the day. These lines were added later, as Anthropic's own pages caught up, and they sit beside the original rather than replacing it.
Added sinceA small documentation edit on Model configuration touched a line naming CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_MODEL after this was published.* **`CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_MODEL`**: Claude Code ignores the variable and picks the model for its [auto mode classifier requests](/docs/en/permission-modes#default-classifier-model) as if you hadn't set itmodel-configsee the edit
Confirmed sinceAnthropic's documentation has since written up CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_MODEL, on Error reference.* If the message returns on every retry and names the model you set in [`CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_MODEL`](/docs/en/permission-modes#choose-the-classifier-model), check that the API or cloud provider your session runs on serves that model ID. …errorssee the edit
