What

Claude Code cleans up text by removing hidden characters that could cause trouble. It now keeps zero-width joiners and non-joiners where they are genuinely needed. These are invisible characters that tell letters or symbols to join or stay apart. They are kept in:

  • Indic conjuncts, where letters combine into one shape
  • Sinhala text
  • Arabic letters that join to their neighbours
  • Emoji made of several parts joined together, matched against the standard emoji list

An option to keep joiners that are written out was also added.

Why

Text in these scripts, and combined emoji, should now display correctly and take up the right width instead of being broken apart.
