What
Before sending a request, Claude Code can check early whether the conversation is too long to fit in the model's context window, the amount of text the model can take in at once. When that early check is skipped, Claude Code now records an event noting:
Where the context window size came from.
What kind of request was being made.
Why compaction failed, if it did. Compaction is when Claude Code summarises earlier parts of the conversation to free up space.
Why
This concerns how Claude Code handles conversations that grow too long, and gives a record of cases where the early check did not run.
