What
In long conversations Claude Code removes older images and documents from what it sends to the model once they pass a size limit. Before, one byte limit covered all media together. Now there can also be a separate limit just for documents such as PDFs, with their size tracked on their own. Images still use the existing limit.
The document limit stays off unless a limit is passed in.
Why
In long sessions where you share many PDFs, older ones may be dropped from the conversation once the document limit is reached, so Claude may no longer see them.
