When Claude tries to open a file that is too large with the Read tool, the tool Claude Code uses to look at files, it gets a notice back. That notice used to say that a call with no limit would fail. It now tells Claude to read the file in portions, or, only if it genuinely needs all of it, to call Read with an option that reads the whole file when it still fits in the conversation's context.
Why
Claude now gets different guidance for large files, so it may read a big file in one go where it would earlier have been told that was impossible.
