What
OSC 52 is a special code a program can print to ask the terminal to copy text to the clipboard. VTE is the building block behind GNOME Terminal and several other Linux terminals.
On Linux or WSL, Claude Code now skips OSC 52 when copying, in these conditions:
the copy through the system's own clipboard tool succeeded
the terminal looks like an xterm-style terminal
there is no sign of Alacritty, kitty or WezTerm
The debug log then shows emit=none(vte). On Linux, Claude Code also now tries the system clipboard tool first. Before, it always sent OSC 52 when not running inside tmux or screen.
Why
This is aimed at stray characters or escape codes appearing in GNOME Terminal after you copy something.
