Unclear Whether the lossless WebP option is used for everyone or only under some switch is not known.
What
The Read tool is what Claude uses to open files. For images it now has these options:
- a lossless WebP version, WebP being an image format and lossless meaning no detail is lost
- its own size limit for sending a WebP image as it is
Before, images were only recompressed, falling back to JPEG.
When Read opens a notebook, a file of code and output cells such as a Jupyter notebook, each cell's output is now checked against a tolerant format. Cell fields are converted to the expected form where possible, and images that are not valid are dropped.
Why
This can change the size and quality of the images Claude is given when it reads them.
