When one of Claude's turns calls a tool that writes to memory, Claude Code now records the time, and a new check compares it with the last time it checked. Two new step names, compact_running_turn_record and compact_sleep, sit beside the existing compaction steps. Compaction is when Claude Code shortens a long conversation so it fits in the model's working memory.
Why
These pieces look like groundwork for new compaction or sleep behaviour, but they do not yet show anything you would notice.
