What
The SDK is the toolkit for running Claude Code from your own programs. Status messages sent through it now have a field, compact_output_chars, marked as internal. During automatic compaction, which is when Claude Code summarises earlier conversation to free up room, it counts how many characters of the summary have been written so far.
Why
Programs built on Claude Code can show that a compaction is still making progress instead of looking stuck.
