What
Vim mode, the optional editing mode for the prompt box that uses vim's keys, now remembers which column you want to be in and keeps it when you move up and down.
- j/k, gj/gk and $ keep a remembered column (the
wantedstate, exposed aswantedColumn) across NORMAL and VISUAL mode. This counts tabs and wide characters correctly. - Escape in NORMAL mode keeps the remembered column when it clears a pending command. Escape from VISUAL with no pending command, or from INSERT, now does an extra step before leaving the mode.
- Toggling visual mode with v or V restores the cursor position.
- Space and backspace are now motions that can cross line ends. In visual mode, backspace uses this new motion instead of acting like h.
- Operators combined with j/k work on whole lines, and a yank leaves the cursor where it was.
- The cursor no longer lands inside placeholders.
Why
Moving up and down through lines of different lengths now behaves the way vim users expect, instead of drifting to whatever column each line allows.
