What

In auto mode, a classifier, which is a model that judges whether an action is safe, checks each tool call (each action Claude wants to take) before it runs. Apps that drive Claude Code through the SDK, or read its -p output, now get a new system message with subtype permission_check_status:

  • It carries a status of checking or done.
  • It is sent when a tool call has waited about four seconds on the auto-mode classifier.
  • permission_check_status is added to the list of message subtypes that also includes ui_panes, ui_scroll and ui_focus.

Why

Host apps can show that a step is being checked instead of leaving the user with a silent pause.
