What

The --marketplace <source> option installs a plugin by its bare name from the marketplace at a given source: an owner/repo, a git or https URL, or a path. Claude Code now checks how you used it and gives a usage error when:

  • the source is missing, or starts with a dash
  • you did not give exactly one plugin name
  • the plugin name already includes @marketplace

In that last case, name the marketplace once only, either as <plugin>@<marketplace> or with --marketplace. A marketplace that has not been added yet is added first, in your user settings, under the same checks as plugin marketplace add.

Why

A mistyped install command now tells you what to fix instead of failing in a less obvious way.

The entry above is what we published on the day. These lines were added later, as Anthropic's own pages caught up, and they sit beside the original rather than replacing it.

Confirmed since Anthropic's documentation has since written up --marketplace, on Install and manage plugins. To install a plugin from a marketplace you haven't added yet, name the marketplace source with `--marketplace` on the install command, in a session or from your shell.
