What

Compaction is when Claude Code summarises a long conversation to free up space. A piece of text that reminded Claude during compaction, "REMINDER: Do NOT call any tools. Respond with plain text only", is no longer stored where it was. A separate change marks when the compaction transcript is unavailable.
