Unclear It is not clear exactly what Claude Code checks to decide that a session counts as remote.

What

The connection address that --sdk-url normally supplies can now come from an environment variable, CLAUDE_CODE_REMOTE_SDK_URL. An environment variable is a named value set in the shell or system before a program starts. When --sdk-url is missing and Claude Code is running as a remote session, the remote session host and the gateway host read their address from this variable. Before, both stopped with an error saying --sdk-url was required.

Why

Cloud-hosted sessions can be given this address through their environment rather than on the command line.
