What
When you give Claude a PDF, Claude Code either sends the whole file to the model or attaches a reference to it, which the model can then read in parts. Before this change, only a large page count or file size made Claude Code use a reference. Now it also uses a reference when the model in use cannot take a whole PDF.
Why
This stops Claude Code from sending whole PDFs to models that would reject them.
