What
MCP servers are outside programs that give Claude extra tools and instructions. Until now, as soon as a server's tools or instructions went missing, Claude Code told the model they had been removed. Claude Code now has a hold for this. When the hold is on, tools and instructions from a server that is reconnecting or still starting up are not reported as removed. Tools that come back after the hold are announced again as re-added.
Why
This is meant to stop Claude losing access to MCP tools during a brief reconnect, which could otherwise make it act as if those tools no longer exist.
