CLAUDE.md files hold instructions that Claude Code reads at the start of a session. Claude Code can now show a warning when the combined size of these files goes over a limit. The warning gives the total number of characters and the limit.
The warning appears only when a server-controlled switch, off unless it is switched on remotely, allows it and a further check on your environment passes.
It tells you when your instruction files have grown too large, so you can trim them.

What the further environment check looks at is not known.
