A cloud session has a tool host, the machine that actually runs its tools. Before, when that tool host ended, the session always ended too.
Now, if the tool host detaches and a way to resume is available, Claude Code tries to attach the session to your device. It proves the request comes from your device, then reconnects instead of ending. This is off unless it is switched on remotely.
Remote sessions may now survive their tool host going away, so you do not lose the session when that happens.
