What
A background job is Claude Code work that keeps running without you watching it. You can reply to one with a follow-up, and that reply now accepts a next-turn option for the job's next step. If you send a next turn to a job that was started by a different Claude Code build, the reply fails with the code ESKEW and a message saying the job runs a different Claude Code build.
Why
Your follow-ups are not sent to an older background process that may no longer match the Claude Code you are using.
