What
The Projects tool lets Claude read and write documents in a project. Before, its description was fixed and local file uploads and memory reads were always allowed. Now:
- The tool's description is built with a
localUploadsoption and amemoryoption, and both can be switched off in some sessions. - In those sessions,
project_writewithlocal_pathfails with "project_write: local_path is not available in this session; pass the text as content." - Large project reads and downloads of files that were not extracted go through a size-limited file store for the session. If the limit is 0, the message is "this session does not keep files".
project_writerefuses content that contains NUL bytes (zero characters, common in binary or UTF-16 files) before uploading. The message says "The content contains NUL bytes, which project docs cannot store" and tells Claude to convert the content to UTF-8.
Why
In some sessions Claude must pass document text directly instead of pointing at a local file. Binary or UTF-16 files are no longer saved as broken project documents.
