What
A memory folder holds notes Claude Code keeps between conversations. If a folder has topic notes (.md files) but no index file, Claude Code can now write one. The index lists a link to each note with its title and a shortened description.
- Files with unsafe names are skipped.
- If the folder cannot be written to, Claude Code gives up and logs a message.
Why
This creates a new file on disk in existing memory folders, so you may notice an index appear that you did not write.
