A session is one running conversation with Claude Code. You can move a session to the background with the left arrow key and reopen it later. Before this release, the safety checks for that move only ran when you pressed the key. Other ways of asking for the same move skipped them.
Those checks are now shared, so every request to move a session is refused in these cases:
- Saving of the session is turned off.
- The session was started with
--project-config-root. - Commands are still queued, waiting to run.
- You have typed text in the input box that you have not sent.
A session started with --project-config-root now shows a warning that it can't be moved to the background.
If Claude is still in the middle of a turn (one round of Claude reading your message and replying), a request to move the session no longer runs straight away. Claude Code holds it until the turn finishes.
Every route for moving a session to the background now gets the same protections, so you are less likely to lose unsent text or queued work. Because the move waits for the current reply to finish, it no longer collides with work Claude is still doing.
