Some tools can run on another machine and send their answer back to your session. When such an answer was too big, Claude Code used to refuse it outright. It now re-encodes any images in it at a smaller size, over several attempts, before giving up.
- The size limit is now a remote setting,
tengu_synthetic_fog. It falls back to 5242880 bytes (5 MB) when the server sends nothing, and is kept within a fixed range. - If the answer is still refused or too large, Claude is told that the command already ran and is advised to run a narrower one, such as reading only part of a file.
Screenshots and large file reads from remote machines should now come back where before they failed. When they still don't fit, Claude knows not to repeat the command and to ask for less instead.
