The model catalog (a list of available models that Claude Code can fetch from Anthropic) is controlled by a remote setting whose mode is one of shadow, primary or off. Previously every part of Claude Code read that single mode. Now each part asks for the mode for its own purpose:
- "served", read by one part of Claude Code
- "published", read by two others
Each falls back to the shared mode when its own is not set. With nothing sent from the server, everything stays off.
The catalog also stays off in several situations regardless of this setting, including depending on CLAUDE_CODE_MODEL_CATALOG, in bare mode, when only essential network traffic is allowed, when ANTHROPIC_UNIX_SOCKET is set, with non-first-party providers, or when an organization policy blocks it.
Serving the catalog and publishing it can now be switched on at different times, so the catalog can be rolled out in stages rather than all at once.
