What
System reminders are notes that Claude Code adds to a conversation. How they are folded used to be decided by reading the remote flag tengu_chair_sermon directly each time a message was built. It is now decided once per conversation and stored as reminderFold. The value is chosen in this order:
an explicit reminderFold option
a value already stored on the conversation
the tengu_chair_sermon flag
The step that pairs tool calls with their results, ensureToolResultPairing, uses the same stored value. When a stored value is reused, the event tengu_reminder_fold_replayed is recorded with fold, cached, matched and cachedSource.
Why
A long or resumed conversation keeps the reminder-folding mode it started with, even if the remote flag changes partway through. Its messages stay built the same way from start to finish.
