Divergence check runs merge-base on its own time budget

Directory sync checks whether your local and remote history have split apart. The git merge-base step of that check now runs on its own, with its own deadline and cancel. It is skipped when your current commit already matches the remote. If it runs out of time, the log says "deadline or abort during the ancestry read".
