4141Before you send your first message, configure four things in the prompt area:
4242
4343* **Environment**: choose where Claude runs. Select **Local** for your machine, **Cloud** for a [cloud session](#cloud-sessions) that continues after you close the app, an [**SSH connection**](#ssh-sessions) for a remote machine you manage, or on Windows a [**WSL distribution**](/docs/en/desktop-wsl). See [environment configuration](#environment-configuration).
44* **Project folder**: select the folder or repository Claude works in. For cloud sessions, you can add [multiple repositories](#run-long-running-tasks-remotely).

4545* **Model**: pick a [model](/docs/en/model-config#available-models) from the dropdown next to the send button. You can change this during the session.
4646* **Permission mode**: choose how much autonomy Claude has from the [mode selector](#choose-a-permission-mode). You can change this during the session.

370370Claude can also suggest new sessions. When it notices something worth fixing that's out of scope for the current task, it offers the work as a task chip in the chat. Click the chip to start that work in a new session with its own worktree; Claude continues your current session uninterrupted.

372### Run long-running tasks in the cloud

374374For large refactors, test suites, migrations, or other long-running tasks, select **Cloud** instead of **Local** when starting a session. Cloud sessions run on Anthropic-managed infrastructure by default and continue even if you close the app or shut down your computer. Check back anytime to see progress or steer Claude in a different direction. You can also monitor cloud sessions from [claude.ai/code](https://claude.ai/code) or the [Claude mobile app](/docs/en/mobile).
375375
376376Cloud sessions also support multiple repositories. After selecting a cloud environment, click the **+** button next to the selected repository to add more repositories to the session. Each repo gets its own branch selector. This is useful for tasks that span multiple codebases, such as updating a shared library and its consumers.

381381
382382The **Continue in** menu, accessible from the VS Code icon in the bottom right of the session toolbar, lets you move your session to another surface:
383383
384* **Claude Code on the Web**: sends your local session to continue running remotely. Desktop pushes your branch, generates a summary of the conversation, and creates a new cloud session with the full context. You can then choose to archive the local session or keep it. This requires a clean working tree, and is not available for SSH sessions.
