DisclaimerUnofficial, and not affiliated with Anthropic. Nearly all of this is read straight out of what ships: npm bundles, captured prompts, published docs. Anthropic's own notes go in verbatim, marked as theirs. The rest is my reading, and every entry carries the strings behind it. If one looks wrong, vote it down and say why.

 * `CLAUDE_BYTE_STREAM_IDLE_TIMEOUT_MS` sets the byte-level watchdog's timeout alone, clamped to between 10 seconds and 30 minutes, and takes precedence over `CLAUDE_STREAM_IDLE_TIMEOUT_MS` for that watchdog.
 * `API_FORCE_IDLE_TIMEOUT` set to `0` turns the body idle timeout off, and set to `1` turns it on for every provider. The watchdogs run independently of it, so to let a stream pause longer than their thresholds, also raise or disable them.

-When a timer aborts a stalled stream, Claude Code handles it like any other mid-stream failure: it retries, keeps completed output with an [incomplete-response notice](/docs/en/errors#the-response-above-may-be-incomplete), or ends the turn, depending on where the response stood.
+When a watchdog aborts a stalled stream, Claude Code treats it as a mid-stream failure: depending on how far the response had got, it retries the request or ends the turn with an error, keeps the completed output and shows an [incomplete-response notice](/docs/en/errors#the-response-above-may-be-incomplete), or ends the turn normally. [Automatic retries](/docs/en/errors#automatic-retries) says where each outcome applies. In a [non-interactive session](/docs/en/headless), Claude Code may first prompt Claude to continue the cut-off response; [that notice's entry](/docs/en/errors#the-response-above-may-be-incomplete) says when it does and when you still see the notice.
