#### Extended context in Claude Desktop ##### Remove the 1M option

868868The gateway derives much of the response from the matched policy's `cli` block and from top-level gateway config:
869869
870* The model list, from `availableModels`
870* The model list, from `availableModels`. [Extended context in Claude Desktop](#extended-context-in-claude-desktop) covers each model's 1M context option
871871* Disabled tools, from bare tool-name `permissions.deny` entries. If you set `disabledBuiltinTools` in the policy's `desktop` block, the gateway serves the union of your value and the derived list, so you can disable more tools this way but can't re-enable one you disabled through `permissions.deny`
872872* The egress allowlist, from `sandbox.network.allowedDomains`. If you set `coworkEgressAllowedHosts` in the policy's `desktop` block, the gateway uses that value instead of the derived list
873873* An OTLP endpoint that points at the gateway itself, and the signed-in user's identity attributes. The gateway relays the exports it receives at that endpoint to your `forward_to` destinations. It includes the endpoint and the attributes when you set both [`telemetry.forward_to`](#telemetry) and `listen.public_url`.
from line 915
915915For every other key, if you set it in the role policy, the gateway uses the role policy's value. The gateway replaces an array or a nested object such as `banner` whole, so if you set `banner.text` in a role policy, the gateway drops the base's `banner.backgroundColor`.
916916
917917If you don't deploy Claude Desktop, leave `desktop` out of your policies entirely; the gateway then returns 404 from `/user/bootstrap` for every user.
918
919#### Extended context in Claude Desktop
920
921If you serve [Claude Desktop](#claude-desktop-overlay) from the gateway, its model picker offers a 1M context option for each listed model that can run with a 1M context window. These include Claude Opus 4.6 and later, Claude Sonnet 4.6 and later, and the Fable models. The option is the model's `[1m]` variant, which [Extended context](/docs/en/model-config#extended-context) describes. You need Claude Code v2.1.284 or later on the gateway server.
922
923A [`models`](#models) entry gets no 1M option when:
924
925* An upstream that can serve the entry maps it to a model without 1M support, including an upstream the gateway reaches only on failover
926* Neither its `id` nor any of its `upstream_model` values names a Claude model, such as a custom alias routed to an application inference profile ARN
927
928To change what the picker offers, use one of these:
929
930* **Start users on the 1M option**: set `modelPrefer1mContext: true` in the policy's `desktop` block. Users who haven't yet chosen a model start on the 1M option when the first listed model has one. Users who already chose a model keep their choice.
931* **Offer the option by hand**: do this if your gateway server runs a version older than v2.1.284, or an entry names no Claude model. List the model twice in `models`, once with its plain ID and once with `[1m]` appended, both with the same `upstream_model` map. Claude Desktop shows the pair as one model with a 1M option. The gateway serves a `[1m]` entry without checking it, so add one only for a model your upstreams serve at 1M.
932
933This example offers the option by hand for a custom alias routed to an application inference profile, and starts new users on it:
934
935```yaml theme={null}
936models:
937 - id: corp-sonnet
938 upstream_model:
939 bedrock: arn:aws:bedrock:us-east-2:123456789012:application-inference-profile/sonnet-5-prod
940 - id: corp-sonnet[1m]
941 upstream_model:
942 bedrock: arn:aws:bedrock:us-east-2:123456789012:application-inference-profile/sonnet-5-prod
943
944managed:
945 policies:
946 - match: {}
947 desktop:
948 modelPrefer1mContext: true
949```
950
951##### Remove the 1M option
952
953To remove the option from the picker, set `CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_1M_CONTEXT: "1"` in the `env` block under the policy's `cli` key. If you also listed an entry whose `id` ends in `[1m]`, the gateway still serves it, so delete that entry too.
954
955The variable also reaches the terminal sessions of developers the policy matches. For what it changes there, see [Extended context](/docs/en/model-config#extended-context).
