### Allow fast mode

from line 81
8181
8282On the Enterprise plan, turning a model off for the whole organization on your **Models** page removes it from the lists in Slack, and Claude declines requests to switch to it. If you turn off the model a scope's **Default model** is set to, Claude still starts sessions there on a fallback model that's still on, and declines only when every fallback is off too. The footer of the first reply names the model that served it.
8383
84### Allow fast mode
85
86[Fast mode](/docs/claude-tag/users/models#run-a-thread-in-fast-mode) gives a thread faster output at a higher cost per token. Claude in Slack and Claude Code share one fast mode setting, so turning it on allows fast mode in both. The setting is off by default on the Team and Enterprise plans.
87
88To allow fast mode, an Owner goes to [**Admin settings > Claude Code**](https://claude.ai/admin-settings/claude-code) and turns on the **Fast mode** toggle under **Capabilities**. Fast mode draws from usage credits, so also turn those on at [**Admin settings > Usage**](https://claude.ai/admin-settings/usage). For an organization billed through AWS Marketplace, the toggle is locked.
89
90Turning the toggle on has these effects in Slack:
91
92* **Speed**: every session starts at standard speed until someone turns fast mode on for it, and no per-channel setting starts sessions in fast mode
93* **Who turns it on**: any member who can message Claude in a channel can turn fast mode on for a thread there by sending [`@Claude !fast`](/docs/claude-tag/users/commands#turn-fast-mode-on-or-off)
94* **Model**: when a thread is on a model other than Opus, such as Sonnet, `!fast` moves it to the newest Opus model among the [models your organization allows](#models-your-organization-allows), and the thread stays on that model after `!fast off`
95* **Where**: sessions stay at standard speed in a channel that runs with [channel-only access](/docs/claude-tag/admins/restrict-access#how-channel-only-works) because a guest is present, and in a channel shared with another company
96* **Cost**: a channel thread in fast mode bills to your organization like other [channel work](/docs/claude-tag/admins/set-spend-limit#how-claude-tag-usage-is-billed), at the [fast mode rates](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/fast-mode#understand-the-cost-tradeoff)
97
8498## Configure the environment for a scope
8599
86100Claude runs every channel session in a sandbox that starts with a standard set of tools. When a channel's work needs something that sandbox doesn't have, such as a language runtime, a database client, a set of environment variables, or broader web access, give the channel an environment. An environment is an [organization-shared cloud environment](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/cloud-environments#organization-shared-environments): you create it once, then choose it on a scope, meaning a channel, a workspace, or **Default Slack access**. Both steps take an Owner; a [channel manager](/docs/claude-tag/admins/restrict-access#delegate-channel-setup-to-channel-managers) can't change a channel's environment.

## Turn fast mode on or off

3> A few exact, bang-prefixed words after an @-mention run a fixed action instead of starting a normal turn: see the command list, get the link to a channel's settings page, restart a stuck or wrong-context session, check whether Claude is still working in a thread or channel, mute or unmute a thread, send feedback, list a channel's routines, and fork a thread's conversation into a new thread, here or in another channel.

9A command is `@Claude` followed immediately by one of a few exact words starting with `!`. Claude matches the message against that word and runs a fixed action instead of starting a normal turn. `!help`, `!configure`, `!restart`, `!status`, `!mute`, and `!unmute` must stand alone: adding extra words, as in `!restart` with words tacked on, makes the message an ordinary prompt instead. `!feedback`, `!routines`, and `!fork` accept text after the command, covered below.

11`!help`, `!configure`, `!restart`, `!status`, `!mute`, and `!unmute` must stand alone: adding extra words, as in `!restart` with words tacked on, makes the message an ordinary prompt instead. `!fast` runs alone or with `on` or `off`. `!feedback`, `!routines`, and `!fork` accept text after the command, covered below.

1315```text wrap theme={null}
from line 98
9698To bring Claude back, send `@Claude !unmute` in the thread, or @-mention Claude there with your next request.
9799
98100A 👎 reaction doesn't tell Claude what was wrong with the answer. To get a corrected answer, @-mention Claude in the thread and say what was wrong. The mention also unmutes the thread.
101
102## Turn fast mode on or off
103
104```text wrap theme={null}
105@Claude !fast
106@Claude !fast off
107```
108
109`!fast` turns on [fast mode](/docs/claude-tag/users/models#run-a-thread-in-fast-mode), which gives faster output at a higher cost per token. `!fast on` does the same, and `!fast off` returns to standard speed. Any other text after `!fast` makes the message an ordinary prompt.
110
111Fast mode runs on Opus models, so `!fast` can change the session's model as well as its speed. The footer of each Claude reply names the model the session is on.
112
113* **If the session is on an Opus model**, it stays on that model
114* **If the session is on another model, such as Sonnet**, Claude switches it to the newest Opus model [you can use](/docs/claude-tag/users/models#which-models-you-can-use). The session stays on that model after `!fast off`. To go back, [ask Claude to switch models](/docs/claude-tag/users/models#switch-the-model-in-a-thread).
115
116In both cases, replies speed up only if that Opus version [supports fast mode](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/fast-mode).
117
118The command changes a different [session](/docs/claude-tag/concepts/glossary#session) depending on where you send it:
119
120* **In a thread**, it changes that thread's session. In a channel thread Claude isn't part of yet, `!fast` starts the thread's session in fast mode and switches its model the same way, so your next request there runs fast from the start.
121* **At a channel's top level**, it changes the channel's own session, the one Claude works from outside any thread. Thread sessions keep their speed.
122* **In a direct message**, it works only inside a thread where Claude is already working
123
124Claude confirms with a reply that everyone in the conversation can see. At a channel's top level, the reply says "channel" in place of "thread". When Claude switches the model, the reply also names the new model, as in this example.
125
126```text wrap theme={null}
127Fast mode is on for this thread. Switched to claude-opus-4-8, since the previous model has no fast mode.
128```
129
130If the session was on another model, such as Sonnet, and the reply says only `Fast mode is on for this thread.`, Claude couldn't switch the model. The session keeps its model, and replies on that model stay at standard speed. One cause is that no Opus model is among the models you can use.
131
132When Claude doesn't apply the command, its reply says why:
133
134| Claude replies | What to do |
135| :- | :- |
136| `Fast mode isn't turned on for this organization. An organization owner can turn it on.` | Ask an Owner to [allow fast mode](/docs/claude-tag/admins/customize#allow-fast-mode) |
137| `Fast mode isn't available in a channel with guests.` | Work in a channel without guests. This channel runs with [channel-only access](/docs/claude-tag/admins/restrict-access#how-channel-only-works) while a guest is present, and sessions there stay at standard speed. |
138| `Only a workspace member who can use Claude here can change fast mode.` | Ask a full member of the workspace who can message Claude in this channel to run the command |
139| `No session is running in this channel.` | Run `!fast` in a thread. You ran it at the top level of a channel that has no session of its own. |
140| `No session is running here, so there is nothing to switch.` | Nothing. You ran `!fast off` in a thread Claude isn't part of, and a new session there starts at standard speed. |
141| `Sorry, I couldn't change fast mode. Please try again.` | Run the command again |
142
143In a [channel shared with another company](/docs/claude-tag/users/troubleshooting#claude-never-responds-in-a-channel-shared-with-another-company), Claude doesn't answer `!fast`. Use a channel that only your organization is in.

45## Run a thread in fast mode
46
47Fast mode gives a thread faster output at a higher cost per token. It's the same [fast mode as in Claude Code](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/fast-mode), and that page lists the models that support it and what it costs. Use it where response time matters more than cost, such as a thread working a live alert.
48
49Fast mode is available once an Owner [allows it for your organization](/docs/claude-tag/admins/customize#allow-fast-mode). To turn it on, send the [`!fast` command](/docs/claude-tag/users/commands#turn-fast-mode-on-or-off) in the thread.
50
51```text wrap theme={null}
52@Claude !fast
53```
54
55Claude confirms with a reply in the thread.
56
57Fast mode runs on Opus models, so a thread on an Opus model stays on it. If the thread is on another model, such as Sonnet, Claude also switches it to the newest Opus model [you can use](#which-models-you-can-use), and the reply names that model. Replies speed up only if that Opus version supports fast mode.
58
59Fast mode applies to the thread you turn it on in, and new threads start at standard speed. The thread goes back to standard speed in any of these cases:
60
61* You send `@Claude !fast off`
62* You ask Claude to [switch models](#switch-the-model-in-a-thread)
63* The thread's session is replaced, for example when you [restart it](/docs/claude-tag/users/commands#restart-a-stuck-or-wrong-context-session)
64
65After `!fast off`, a thread that Claude switched to Opus stays on Opus. To return to the earlier model, ask Claude to switch.
66
67Fast mode isn't available in a channel that runs with [channel-only access](/docs/claude-tag/admins/restrict-access#how-channel-only-works) because a guest is present, or in a [channel shared with another company](/docs/claude-tag/users/troubleshooting#claude-never-responds-in-a-channel-shared-with-another-company).
68
4569## Which models you can use
4670
4771Anthropic manages the list of models on offer, and your organization's settings narrow it. The options include Opus and Sonnet models, drawn from the models your organization allows, and in channels that list applies regardless of your own account's model access. Every list you see in Slack, the direct message selector and the models Claude offers to switch to, is already filtered to that set.
