46| Command | Purpose |
47| :----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | :---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
48| `/add-dir <path>` | Add a working directory for file access during the current session. Type a partial path to see matching directory suggestions; press `Tab` to accept one. Most `.claude/` configuration [isn't discovered](/docs/en/permissions#additional-directories-grant-file-access-not-configuration) from the added directory. You can't add most [network paths](/docs/en/errors#working-directory-is-a-network-path), such as `\\server\share`. After a successful add, your [`DirectoryAdded` hooks](/docs/en/hooks#directoryadded) run. When you run it while Claude is responding, Claude Code asks you to confirm the directory right away, and once you confirm, Claude's next tool call in the same turn can access it. Before v2.1.234, Claude Code queued the command until the turn finished |
49| `/advisor [model\|off]` | Enable or disable the [advisor tool](/docs/en/advisor), which consults a second model for guidance at key moments during a task. Accepts `fable`, `opus`, `sonnet`, or a full model ID. `fable` requires [Fable access](/docs/en/advisor#choose-an-advisor-model). Without an argument, opens a picker. In a session without an interactive terminal, or over [Remote Control](/docs/en/remote-control#limitations), pass the model or `off` as an argument; with no argument there, the command prints the current advisor as text. These forms require Claude Code v2.1.260 or later |
50| `/agents` | As of v2.1.198, running `/agents` prints a reminder to ask Claude to create or manage [subagents](/docs/en/sub-agents), or to edit `.claude/agents/` or `~/.claude/agents/` directly. On v2.1.197 and earlier, opens an interactive interface for creating and managing subagent configurations |
51| `/artifacts` | List the [artifacts](/docs/en/artifacts#find-an-artifact-again) you own or that are shared with you, then attach one to the session, open it in your browser, or copy its link. Available where [artifacts](/docs/en/artifacts#availability) are. Requires Claude Code v2.1.208 or later; attaching with `Enter` requires v2.1.216 |
52| `/auto-mode-setup` | [Draft `autoMode.environment` entries](/docs/en/auto-mode-config#generate-environment-entries) from your project and recent sessions, then review the draft and save it to your user settings. Requires a Pro, Max, or Team plan and Claude Code v2.1.228 or later. On native Windows, requires v2.1.233 or later |
53| `/autocompact [auto\|<tokens>]` | Set the auto-compact window: how full the context window gets before Claude Code compacts automatically. Pass a size such as `500k`, or `auto` to return to the window tuned for your model. Claude Code saves the value to user settings and applies it to the current session. See [Set the auto-compact window](/docs/en/model-config#set-the-auto-compact-window) for accepted values and what overrides it. Without an argument, opens a dialog that shows the current window. Requires Claude Code v2.1.221 or later |
54| `/autofix-pr [prompt]` | Spawn a [cloud session](/docs/en/claude-code-on-the-web#auto-fix-pull-requests) that watches the current branch's PR and pushes fixes when CI fails or reviewers leave comments. Detects the open PR from your checked-out branch with `gh pr view`; to watch a different PR, check out its branch first. By default the cloud session is told to fix every CI failure and review comment; pass a prompt to give it different instructions, for example `/autofix-pr only fix lint and type errors`. Requires the `gh` CLI and access to [cloud sessions](/docs/en/claude-code-on-the-web) |
55| `/background [prompt]` | Detach the current session to run as a [background agent](/docs/en/agent-view) and free this terminal. Pass a prompt to send one more instruction before detaching. Monitor the session with `claude agents`. To copy the conversation into a new background session while this one keeps running, use `/fork`. Alias: `/bg` |
56| `/batch <instruction>` | **[Skill](/docs/en/skills#bundled-skills).** Orchestrate large-scale changes across a codebase in parallel. Researches the codebase, decomposes the work into 5 to 30 independent units, and presents a plan. Once approved, spawns one [background subagent](/docs/en/sub-agents#run-subagents-in-foreground-or-background) per unit in an isolated [worktree](/docs/en/worktrees). Each subagent implements its unit, runs tests, and publishes its change. Requires a git repository or a [`WorktreeCreate` hook](/docs/en/worktrees#non-git-version-control) that creates the worktrees. Outside a git repository, `/batch` requires Claude Code v2.1.281 or later. Example: `/batch migrate src/ from JavaScript to TypeScript` |
57| `/branch [name]` | Create a branch of the current conversation at this point, so you can try a different direction without losing the conversation as it stands. Switches you into the branch and preserves the original, which you can return to with `/resume`. To run a copy as a separate [background session](/docs/en/agent-view) instead of switching into it, use `/fork`; to hand a side task to a [subagent](/docs/en/sub-agents) that reports back into this conversation, use `/subtask` |
58| `/btw [question]` | Ask a [side question](/docs/en/interactive-mode#side-questions-with-%2Fbtw) about the current session without adding to the conversation. If you run `/btw` without a question, Claude Code shows your most recent side question so you can browse earlier answers; if you haven't asked one yet, Claude Code prints a usage line. Before v2.1.212, `/btw` required a question |
59| `/bug [report]` | Report a bug or share your conversation. You choose how much session history to include and confirm on a consent screen before anything is sent. When you're signed in to Anthropic on a first-party connection, the report goes to Anthropic; on a third-party provider, or without Anthropic credentials, Claude Code writes the report to a [local archive under `~/.claude/feedback-bundles/`](/docs/en/data-usage#telemetry-services) that you forward yourself. In the [VS Code extension](/docs/en/vs-code#use-the-prompt-box), `/bug` opens the extension's own feedback dialog instead; requires Claude Code v2.1.229 or later. When you run it while Claude is responding, Claude Code opens the dialog immediately. Before v2.1.232, Claude Code queued the command until the turn finished. Alias: `/share`. Before v2.1.212, `/bug` and `/share` were aliases of `/feedback` |
60| `/cd <path>` | Move this session to a new working directory, keeping the conversation. Type a partial path to see matching directory suggestions; press `Tab` to accept one. The suggestions require Claude Code v2.1.206 or later. For what Claude Code applies from the new directory as soon as you move, and how `/cd` differs from `/add-dir`, see [Move the session to another directory](/docs/en/permissions#move-the-session-to-another-directory) |
61| `/chrome` | Configure [Claude in Chrome](/docs/en/chrome) settings |
62| `/claude-api [migrate\|upgrade\|managed-agents-onboard\|prompt-audit\|cost-optimize\|build-eval\|hillclimb]` | **[Skill](/docs/en/skills#bundled-skills).** Load [Claude API](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/api/overview) and [Managed Agents](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/managed-agents/overview) reference material for your project's language. Also activates automatically when your code imports `anthropic` or `@anthropic-ai/sdk`. Run `migrate` to update existing Claude API code to a newer model. Run `upgrade` to move your project's Anthropic SDK dependency across a major version, currently the Python `anthropic` package from 0.x to 1.x. Run `managed-agents-onboard` for a walkthrough that creates a new Managed Agent. Run `prompt-audit` to flag instructions written for older models in your prompts, skills, and tool descriptions and propose fixes as a diff. Run `cost-optimize` to profile where your project's Claude API spend goes and propose savings from options such as prompt caching, trimming unneeded input and output tokens, batch processing, effort, and model choice, one change at a time. Run `build-eval` to build an eval set for your Claude-powered app, and `hillclimb` to iteratively improve the app against an existing eval. The `prompt-audit` subcommand requires Claude Code v2.1.221 or later, `upgrade` requires v2.1.236 or later, `cost-optimize` requires v2.1.247 or later, and `build-eval` and `hillclimb` require v2.1.259 or later |
63| `/clear [name]` | Start a new conversation with empty context. Pass a name to label the previous conversation in the `/resume` picker. To free up context while continuing the same conversation, use `/compact` instead. Resume the previous conversation with `/resume`, or, in the same Claude Code process, restore it from [the rewind menu's previous-session entry](/docs/en/checkpointing#rewind-past-a-cleared-conversation). Aliases: `/reset`, `/new` |
64| `/code-review [low\|medium\|high\|xhigh\|max\|ultra] [--fix] [--comment] [pr#\|branch\|path]` | **[Skill](/docs/en/skills#bundled-skills).** Review the current diff, or a PR number, branch, or path you pass, for correctness bugs. Depending on your model and effort level, the review also covers cleanup opportunities. Pass `--fix` to apply findings, `--comment` to post them on the GitHub PR or GitLab merge request, or `ultra` to run a deep [cloud review](/docs/en/ultrareview). Posting to a GitLab merge request requires Claude Code v2.1.257 or later. With `ultra` on a `github.com` PR target, pass `--post` to preselect [posting the finished findings to the PR](/docs/en/ultrareview#post-findings-to-the-pull-request) in the launch dialog; `--post` requires Claude Code v2.1.227 or later. See [Review a diff locally](/docs/en/code-review#review-a-diff-locally) for the effort levels, targeting, and how it relates to `/simplify`. Alias: `/review` |
65| `/color [color\|default]` | Set the prompt bar color for the current session. Available colors: `red`, `blue`, `green`, `yellow`, `purple`, `orange`, `pink`, `cyan`. Use `default` to reset, or run with no argument to pick a random color. When [Remote Control](/docs/en/remote-control) is connected, the color syncs to claude.ai/code. Also available in non-interactive mode (`-p`); requires Claude Code v2.1.205 or later |
66| `/compact [instructions]` | Free up context by summarizing the conversation so far. Optionally pass focus instructions for the summary. See [how compaction handles rules, skills, and memory files](/docs/en/context-window#what-survives-compaction) |
67| `/config [key=value ...]` | Open the [Settings](/docs/en/settings) interface to adjust theme, model, [output style](/docs/en/output-styles), and other preferences. Pass one or more `key=value` pairs to set a setting directly without opening the interface, for example `/config thinking=false`, `/config theme=dark`, or `/config model=sonnet`. The `key=value` form also works in non-interactive mode (`-p`) and from the Claude mobile app via [Remote Control](/docs/en/remote-control). The `key=value` form can't turn on a setting that needs your confirmation in the panel, such as [`autoContinueAtUsageLimit`](/docs/en/interactive-mode#turn-automatic-continue-off), though it can turn one off. Run `/config --help` to list the keys it accepts. Alias: `/settings` |
68| `/context [all]` | Visualize current context usage as a colored grid. Shows optimization suggestions for context-heavy tools, memory bloat, and capacity warnings. When the conversation exceeds the context window, the output includes a [warning](/docs/en/errors#context-exceeds-the-token-limit) showing how far over the limit you are and which command frees space. In [fullscreen mode](/docs/en/fullscreen), `/context` collapses the per-item breakdown to keep the grid visible. Pass `all` to expand it |
69| `/copy [N]` | Copy the last assistant response to clipboard. Pass a number `N` to copy the Nth-latest response: `/copy 2` copies the second-to-last. When code blocks are present, shows an interactive picker to select individual blocks or the full response. Press `w` in the picker to write the selection to a file instead of the clipboard, which is useful over SSH |
70| `/cost` | Alias for `/usage` |
71| `/dataviz [request]` | **[Skill](/docs/en/skills#bundled-skills).** Design guidance for charts, graphs, and dashboards. Claude picks the chart form for the data, assigns color by role, validates the palette for colorblind safety and contrast with a bundled script, and applies mark, interaction, and accessibility rules. Uses a brand-neutral placeholder palette that you replace with your own. Requires Claude Code v2.1.198 or later |
72| `/debug [description]` | **[Skill](/docs/en/skills#bundled-skills).** Enable debug logging for the current session and troubleshoot issues by reading the session debug log. Debug logging is off by default unless you started with `claude --debug`, so running `/debug` mid-session starts capturing logs from that point forward. Optionally describe the issue to focus the analysis |
73| `/deep-research <question>` | **[Workflow](/docs/en/workflows#bundled-workflows).** Fan out web searches on a question, fetch and cross-check sources, and synthesize a cited report |
74| `/design [brief]` | **[Skill](/docs/en/skills#bundled-skills).** Draft UI mockups, screen flows, landing pages, or posters as artboards on one canvas, published as a Design [artifact](/docs/en/artifacts#draft-a-design-canvas), for example `/design a settings screen for a mobile banking app`. You edit the artboards in a desktop browser, and your edits save automatically. You can export each artboard as PNG or PDF. Requires a session where [artifacts are available](/docs/en/artifacts#availability) and Claude Code v2.1.265 or later. Available on the Anthropic API. On Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud's Agent Platform, Microsoft Foundry, and Claude Platform on AWS, artifacts aren't available, so the command is unavailable there |
75| `/design-login` | Authorize design-system access for `/design-sync` with your claude.ai account |
76| `/design-sync [hint]` | **[Skill](/docs/en/skills#bundled-skills).** Convert your repo's React design system and upload it to [Claude Design](https://claude.ai/design), so designs it produces use your real components. Optionally name the design system, for example `/design-sync Acme DS`. A first-time sync verifies every component and can take a few hours on a large repo. Available on the Anthropic API. It needs claude.ai, which the CLI doesn't contact on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud's Agent Platform, Microsoft Foundry, or Claude Platform on AWS, or through a [Claude apps gateway](/docs/en/claude-apps-gateway#availability-and-limitations), so the command is unavailable there |
77| `/desktop` | Continue the current session in the Claude Code Desktop app. Requires macOS or x64 Windows and a Claude subscription. Alias: `/app` |
78| `/diff` | Review the changes in your working tree, including the edits Claude has made so far. See [Review changes with /diff](/docs/en/interactive-mode#review-changes-with-%2Fdiff) |
79| `/doctor` | **[Skill](/docs/en/skills#bundled-skills).** Run a setup checkup that diagnoses issues and can fix them. Checks installation health, including duplicate or leftover installs, `PATH` problems, and unparseable settings files. Finds unused skills, MCP servers, and plugins versus their context cost, flags slow [hooks](/docs/en/hooks), and checks for a newer version on your [release channel](/docs/en/setup#configure-release-channel). Deduplicates local `CLAUDE.md` files against checked-in ones, trims checked-in [`CLAUDE.md`](/docs/en/memory#my-claude-md-is-too-large) files by cutting content Claude could derive from the codebase, and migrates the always-loaded guidance that remains into [skills](/docs/en/skills) and nested `CLAUDE.md` files that load on demand. Also offers to make [auto mode](/docs/en/permissions#permission-modes) your default and to [pre-approve](/docs/en/permissions) frequently denied read-only commands. Reports findings first and asks for confirmation before changing anything. From the terminal, `claude doctor` prints read-only installation diagnostics without starting a session. Alias: `/checkup`. The `CLAUDE.md` trim check requires Claude Code v2.1.206 or later. Before v2.1.205, `/doctor` opened a read-only diagnostics screen and pressing `f` sent the report to Claude |
80| `/effort [level\|auto\|status]` | Set the [effort level](/docs/en/model-config#adjust-effort-level): `low` to `xhigh`, `max`, [`ultracode`](/docs/en/workflows#let-claude-decide-with-ultracode), or `auto`; `status` prints it. `max` and `ultracode` are session-only; the [`ultracode`](/docs/en/settings-reference#ultracode) key persists. Run it while Claude is responding and, once you confirm the [cache warning](/docs/en/prompt-caching#changing-effort-level), if Claude Code shows one, Claude Code applies the new level to the next request in that turn. Before v2.1.242, Claude Code decided from a feature flag it fetched from Anthropic whether to run the command mid-turn or queue it until the turn finished, and always queued it in a session that doesn't [fetch feature flags](/docs/en/env-vars#features-that-need-feature-flag-fetching), such as on a [third-party provider](/docs/en/third-party-integrations). Works in `-p` |
81| `/exit` | Exit the CLI. In an attached [background session](/docs/en/agent-view#attach-to-a-session), this detaches and the session keeps running. Alias: `/quit` |
82| `/export [filename]` | Export the current conversation as plain text. With a filename, writes directly to that file. Without, opens a dialog to copy to clipboard or save to a file |
83| `/fast [on\|off]` | Toggle [fast mode](/docs/en/fast-mode) on or off. Run it while Claude is responding and Claude Code toggles fast mode without waiting for the turn to end, though the running turn finishes at its original speed. Before v2.1.242, Claude Code decided from a feature flag it fetched from Anthropic whether to run the command mid-turn or queue it until the turn finished, and always queued it in a session that doesn't [fetch feature flags](/docs/en/env-vars#features-that-need-feature-flag-fetching). Availability in non-interactive mode with `-p` is limited; see [Toggle fast mode](/docs/en/fast-mode#toggle-fast-mode). Requires Claude Code v2.1.205 or later |
84| `/feedback [report]` | Send product feedback about Claude Code. Opens the same dialog as [`/bug`](#all-commands), with the same consent step, sending rules, and mid-turn behavior. In sessions with [Claude-drafted feedback](/docs/en/tools-reference#sendfeedback-tool-behavior), `/feedback` with no argument opens the drafts queue instead, where you review, edit, send, or discard the drafts Claude queued; the queue includes an option to write a new report in the dialog. With an argument, and for `/bug` always, the dialog opens directly |
85| `/fewer-permission-prompts` | **[Skill](/docs/en/skills#bundled-skills).** Scan your transcripts for common read-only Bash and MCP tool calls, then add a prioritized allowlist to project `.claude/settings.json` to reduce permission prompts |
86| `/focus` | Toggle the focus view, which shows only your last prompt, a one-line tool-call summary with edit diffstats, and the final response. The tool-call summary also counts the subagents launched in the turn and collapses completed background-task notifications into a single count. The selection persists across sessions; set [`viewMode`](/docs/en/settings-reference#viewmode) in settings to override it. Only available in [fullscreen rendering](/docs/en/fullscreen). The [VS Code extension](/docs/en/vs-code#use-the-prompt-box) offers its own Focus view as a command-menu toggle, stored as an extension setting, independent of `viewMode` |
87| `/fork [prompt]` | [Copy the current conversation](/docs/en/agent-view#copy-the-session-with-%2Ffork) into a new background session and keep working here. Pass a prompt and the copy starts working on it immediately; without one it waits in agent view for its first prompt. Except when the copy [edits in place](/docs/en/agent-view#how-file-edits-are-isolated), Claude Code instructs it to create a worktree of its own before making code changes; the isolation instruction requires Claude Code v2.1.221 or later. To hand a side task to a subagent whose result comes back into this conversation, use `/subtask`; to switch into a copy yourself, use `/branch`. Requires Claude Code v2.1.212 or later; on v2.1.161 through v2.1.211, and whenever [agent view is turned off](/docs/en/agent-view#turn-off-agent-view), `/fork` starts a [forked subagent](/docs/en/sub-agents#fork-the-current-conversation) instead |
88| `/goal [condition\|clear]` | Set a [goal](/docs/en/goal): Claude keeps working across turns until the condition is met or the goal [clears for another reason](/docs/en/goal#how-evaluation-works). With no argument, shows the current or most recently achieved goal. `clear`, `stop`, `off`, `reset`, `none`, or `cancel` removes an active goal early |
89| `/heapdump` | Write a JavaScript heap snapshot and a memory breakdown to `~/Desktop`, or your home directory on Linux without a Desktop folder, for diagnosing high memory usage. Attach only the `-diagnostics.json` file when reporting a memory issue; the `.heapsnapshot` contains your full conversation and credentials, so don't share it. [Hidden from the command menu](#how-the-command-menu-matches-what-you-type); type it in full. See [what to do with the output](/docs/en/troubleshooting#high-cpu-or-memory-usage) |
90| `/help` | Show help and available commands |
91| `/hooks` | View [hook](/docs/en/hooks) configurations for tool events |
92| `/ide` | Manage IDE integrations and show status |
93| `/import [codex\|gemini\|cursor] [--dry-run] [--yes]` | Bring configuration from OpenAI Codex, Google Gemini CLI, or Cursor on your machine into Claude Code, including instruction files, MCP servers, commands, subagents, and skills. In [non-interactive mode](/docs/en/headless) with `-p`, `/import` lists what it found and gives you the command that confirms the import. Add `--dry-run` to preview without writing anything, or `--yes` to skip the interactive picker. Not available on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud's Agent Platform, Microsoft Foundry, or Claude Platform on AWS, or through a [Claude apps gateway](/docs/en/claude-apps-gateway#availability-and-limitations). Also unavailable when you turn off [feature-flag fetching](/docs/en/env-vars#features-that-need-feature-flag-fetching). Requires Claude Code v2.1.213 or later. Importing from Cursor requires v2.1.265 or later |
94| `/init` | Initialize project with a `CLAUDE.md` guide. Set `CLAUDE_CODE_NEW_INIT=1` for an interactive flow that also walks through skills, hooks, and personal memory files. If `/init` finds OpenAI Codex or Google Gemini CLI configuration, it offers to carry it over with `/import` |
95| `/insights` | Generate an HTML report analyzing your recent sessions on this machine: which projects you work in, how you use Claude Code, where things go wrong, and features to try. Not available in [cloud sessions](/docs/en/claude-code-on-the-web). See [Analyze your usage patterns](/docs/en/costs#analyze-your-usage-patterns) for the report location, retention, and cost |
96| `/install-github-app` | Install the Claude GitHub App for a repository, with an optional step to set up [GitHub Actions](/docs/en/github-actions) workflows and secrets. Walks you through selecting a repo and configuring the integration. Works only with github.com repositories. When your repository's git remote is on gitlab.com or bitbucket.org, the command prints a notice and exits instead of starting setup. To run Claude Code from GitLab pipelines, see [GitLab CI/CD](/docs/en/gitlab-ci-cd) |
97| `/install-slack-app` | Install the Claude Slack app. Opens a browser to complete the OAuth flow |
98| `/keybindings` | Open your [keyboard shortcuts](/docs/en/keybindings) file |
99| `/list-agents` | List the subagents, [agent team](/docs/en/agent-teams) teammates, and other Claude Code sessions Claude can message, with the name to use for each. See [cross-session messaging](/docs/en/cross-session-messaging). Also available as `/peers`. Requires Claude Code v2.1.224 or later; earlier versions report `Unknown command: /list-agents`. Teammate rows and the first line showing this session's own name require v2.1.239 or later. Available only in sessions where [cross-session messaging is enabled](/docs/en/cross-session-messaging#availability) |
100| `/login` | Sign in to your Anthropic account |
101| `/logout` | Sign out from your Anthropic account |
102| `/loop [interval] [prompt]` | **[Skill](/docs/en/skills#bundled-skills).** Run a prompt repeatedly while the session stays open. Omit the interval and Claude [self-paces between iterations](/docs/en/scheduled-tasks#let-claude-choose-the-interval). Omit the prompt and Claude runs the [built-in maintenance prompt](/docs/en/scheduled-tasks#run-the-built-in-maintenance-prompt) or your [`loop.md`](/docs/en/scheduled-tasks#customize-the-default-prompt-with-loop-md). Example: `/loop 5m check if the deploy finished`. See [Run prompts on a schedule](/docs/en/scheduled-tasks). Alias: `/proactive` |
103| `/mcp [reconnect <server>\|enable\|disable [<server>\|all]]` | Manage MCP server connections and OAuth authentication. Run with no argument to open the interactive list, pass `reconnect <server>` to reconnect one disconnected server, or pass `enable`/`disable` with a server name or `all` to change connection state without opening the dialog. Also available in non-interactive mode (`-p`), where running it with no argument prints a text summary of server status instead of opening the list; requires Claude Code v2.1.205 or later |
104| `/memory` | Edit `CLAUDE.md` files, enable or disable [auto memory](/docs/en/memory#auto-memory), and view auto memory entries |
105| `/mobile` | Show QR code to download the Claude mobile app. Aliases: `/ios`, `/android` |
106| `/model [model]` | Switch the AI model and save it as your default for new sessions. For models that support it, use left/right arrows to [adjust effort level](/docs/en/model-config#adjust-effort-level). With no argument, opens a picker; press `s` on a row to switch for the current session only. See [when Claude Code asks you to confirm the switch](/docs/en/prompt-caching#switching-models). Once you confirm the switch, if Claude Code asks, Claude Code applies the change without waiting for the current response to finish. Also available in non-interactive mode (`-p`) with a model argument instead of the picker, where it applies to the current session only and isn't saved as your default; requires Claude Code v2.1.205 or later |
107| `/output-style [style]` | List [output styles](/docs/en/output-styles) or switch to one, for example `/output-style concise`. See [Change your output style](/docs/en/output-styles#change-your-output-style). Requires Claude Code v2.1.269 or later |
108| `/passes` | Share a free week of Claude Code with friends. Only visible if your account is eligible |
109| `/permissions` | Manage allow, ask, and deny rules for tool permissions. Opens an interactive dialog where you can view rules by scope, add or remove rules, manage working directories, and review [recent auto mode denials](/docs/en/auto-mode-config#review-denials). You can also view and edit [auto mode classifier rules](/docs/en/auto-mode-config#edit-rules-from-permissions) from the dialog's **Auto mode** tab. When you run it while Claude is responding, Claude Code opens the dialog immediately and applies your changes starting with Claude's next tool call in the same turn. Before v2.1.234, Claude Code queued the command until the turn finished. Alias: `/allowed-tools` |
110| `/plan [description]` | Enter plan mode directly from the prompt. Pass an optional description to enter plan mode and immediately start with that task, for example `/plan fix the auth bug` |
111| `/plugin [subcommand]` | Manage Claude Code [plugins](/docs/en/plugins/overview). Run with no argument to open the plugin menu, or pass a subcommand such as `list`, `install`, `enable`, or `disable` to act directly. Claude Code can activate a plugin during the install; the [install summary](/docs/en/plugins/install#install-a-plugin) tells you whether it did or whether to run `/reload-plugins` |
112| `/powerup` | Discover Claude Code features through quick interactive lessons with animated demos |
113| `/pr-comments [PR]` | Removed in v2.1.91. Ask Claude directly to view pull request comments instead. On earlier versions, fetches and displays comments from a GitHub pull request; automatically detects the PR for the current branch, or pass a PR URL or number. Requires the `gh` CLI |
114| `/privacy-settings` | View and update your privacy settings. Only available for Pro and Max plan subscribers |
115| `/radio` | Open Claude FM lo-fi radio in your browser. Prints the stream URL when no browser is available |
116| `/rate-limit-options` | Show ways to keep working when a claude.ai usage limit blocks a request: wait and [continue automatically when the limit resets](/docs/en/interactive-mode#wait-for-a-usage-limit-to-reset), add [usage credits](/docs/en/costs#add-usage-credits-to-your-subscription), or upgrade your plan. Claude Code can also open this menu on its own when you hit a limit at your own terminal. See [Turn automatic continue off](/docs/en/interactive-mode#turn-automatic-continue-off). Requires a claude.ai subscription. Doesn't appear in the command menu; type it in full. The wait-and-continue rows require Claude Code v2.1.234 or later |
117| `/recap` | Generate a one-line summary of the current session on demand. See [Session recap](/docs/en/interactive-mode#session-recap) for the automatic recap that appears after you've been away |
118| `/release-notes` | View the changelog in an interactive version picker. Select a specific version to see its release notes, or choose to show all versions. The notes appear in your transcript without entering the conversation Claude sees |
119| `/reload-plugins [--force]` | Reload all active [plugins](/docs/en/plugins/overview) to apply pending changes without restarting. Reports counts for each reloaded component and flags any load errors. When the reload would change which MCP tools are loaded and invalidate the prompt cache, the command warns and skips unless you pass `--force`. Also available in non-interactive mode (`-p`), the Agent SDK, and the desktop app, where it runs only on input typed directly into the session and doesn't apply plugin MCP server changes; requires Claude Code v2.1.260 or later. See [Apply plugin changes without restarting](/docs/en/plugins/cli-reference#reload-plugins) |
120| `/reload-skills` | Re-scan [skill](/docs/en/skills) and command directories so skills added or changed on disk during the session become available without restarting. Reports how many skills are available and how many were added or removed |
121| `/remote-control` | Make this session available for [Remote Control](/docs/en/remote-control) from claude.ai. Running it while signed out prints that Remote Control requires a claude.ai subscription and tells you how to sign in; before v2.1.206 it reported `Unknown command: /remote-control`. Alias: `/rc` |
122| `/remote-env` | Choose the default [cloud environment](/docs/en/cloud-environments#select-an-environment-from-the-cli) for cloud sessions you start from the CLI |
123| `/rename [name]` | Rename the current session and show the name on the prompt bar. Without a name, auto-generates one from conversation history. Also available in non-interactive mode (`-p`); requires Claude Code v2.1.205 or later. From every rename surface, including claude.ai and the desktop app, Claude Code replaces control and invisible characters in the new name with spaces and caps the name at 200 characters. If the name is empty once invisible characters are removed, Claude Code rejects it and shows `That name is empty once invisible characters are removed. Usage: /rename <name>`. The character replacement and length cap require Claude Code v2.1.221 or later. If another live session on this machine already uses a name you pass, Claude Code applies [a variant of it](/docs/en/sessions#name-your-sessions) instead |
124| `/resume [session]` | Resume a conversation by ID or name, or open the session picker. [Background sessions](/docs/en/agent-view) appear in the picker marked with `bg`; one that is still running can't be resumed here, so attach to it from `claude agents` or stop it there first. Alias: `/continue` |
125| `/review [low\|medium\|high\|xhigh\|max\|ultra] [--fix] [--comment] [pr#\|branch\|path]` | Alias of [`/code-review`](/docs/en/code-review#review-a-diff-locally): reviews the current diff, or a PR number, branch, or path you pass, such as `/review 1234`, and takes the same effort levels and flags. With no level given, the review reuses the last `low` through `max` level you typed; see [Review a diff locally](/docs/en/code-review#review-a-diff-locally) for the exact rules. For a deep cloud review, use [`/code-review ultra`](/docs/en/ultrareview). Before v2.1.223, `/review` was a separate command that ran a single-pass, read-only review of a GitHub pull request by number, listing open PRs to pick from when run with no argument; from v2.1.186 through v2.1.201, it ran the same multi-agent engine as `/code-review medium` |
126| `/rewind` | Rewind the conversation and/or code to a previous point, or summarize from a selected message. See [checkpointing](/docs/en/checkpointing). Aliases: `/checkpoint`, `/undo` |
127| `/run` | **[Skill](/docs/en/skills#bundled-skills).** Launch and drive your project's app to see a change working, not only passing tests. See [Run and verify your app](/docs/en/skills#run-and-verify-your-app) |
128| `/run-skill-generator` | **[Skill](/docs/en/skills#bundled-skills).** Teach `/run` and `/verify` how to build, launch, and drive your project's app from a clean environment by writing a per-project [skill](/docs/en/skills#run-and-verify-your-app) |
129| `/sandbox` | Toggle [sandbox mode](/docs/en/sandboxing). Available on supported platforms only |
130| `/schedule [description]` | Create, update, list, or run [routines](/docs/en/routines), which execute in the cloud. Claude walks you through the setup conversationally. You can also ask about a [routine's recent runs](/docs/en/routines#manage-routines-from-the-cli). Alias: `/routines` |
131| `/scroll-speed` | Adjust mouse wheel [scroll speed](/docs/en/fullscreen#mouse-wheel-scrolling) interactively, with a ruler you can scroll while the dialog is open to preview the change. Available in [fullscreen rendering](/docs/en/fullscreen) only and not in the JetBrains IDE terminal |
132| `/security-review` | Analyze the changes on your current branch for security vulnerabilities. Reviews the diff between your branch and origin's default branch, identifying risks like injection, auth issues, and data exposure. Needs an `origin` remote; if the review fails with an `ambiguous argument` error, see the [error reference](/docs/en/errors#security-review-fails-without-origin-head) |
133| `/setup-bedrock` | Configure [Amazon Bedrock](/docs/en/amazon-bedrock) authentication, region, and model pins through an interactive wizard. [Hidden from the command menu](#how-the-command-menu-matches-what-you-type) until `CLAUDE_CODE_USE_BEDROCK=1` is set; type it in full. First-time Amazon Bedrock users can also access this wizard from the login screen |
134| `/setup-vertex` | Configure [Google Cloud's Agent Platform](/docs/en/google-vertex-ai) authentication, project, region, and model pins through an interactive wizard. [Hidden from the command menu](#how-the-command-menu-matches-what-you-type) until `CLAUDE_CODE_USE_VERTEX=1` is set; type it in full. First-time Google Cloud's Agent Platform users can also access this wizard from the login screen |
135| `/simplify [target]` | **[Skill](/docs/en/skills#bundled-skills).** Review the changed code for cleanup opportunities and apply the fixes. Four review [agents](/docs/en/sub-agents) run in parallel, covering reuse of existing helpers, simplification, efficiency, and whether the change is at the right level of abstraction. The review doesn't look for correctness bugs. Use `/code-review` to find bugs. Pass a path or PR reference to review a specific target |
136| `/skill-doctor` | Show what each of your [skills](/docs/en/skills) costs in context and how often it gets used, so you can [find skills to turn off](/docs/en/skills#find-unused-skills). Requires Claude Code v2.1.252 or later and [feature-flag fetching](/docs/en/env-vars#features-that-need-feature-flag-fetching) |
137| `/skills` | List available [skills](/docs/en/skills). Type to filter the list by name, description, or source. Press `t` to sort by token count, `Space` or `Enter` to [cycle a skill's visibility to Claude and the `/` menu](/docs/en/skills#override-skill-visibility-from-settings), and `Esc` to save and close. You can't cycle plugin skills, skills whose frontmatter sets `disable-model-invocation: true`, or skills with a `skillOverrides` entry in managed settings or the `--settings` flag |
138| `/stats` | Alias for `/usage`. Opens on the Stats tab |
139| `/status` | Open the Settings interface on the Status tab, showing version, model, account, and connectivity. A `Session kind` row reads `background job · attached` or `background job · unattended` in a [background session](/docs/en/agent-view), depending on whether a terminal is attached, and `interactive` in any other session. Before v2.1.221, `/status` didn't show this row. Works while Claude is responding |
140| `/statusline` | Configure Claude Code's [status line](/docs/en/statusline). Describe what you want, or run without arguments to auto-configure from your shell prompt |
141| `/stickers` | Order Claude Code stickers |
142| `/stop` | Stop the current [background session](/docs/en/agent-view). Only available while attached to a background session; the transcript and any worktree are kept. To detach without stopping, use `/exit` or press `←` |
143| `/subtask <task>` | Spawn a [forked subagent](/docs/en/sub-agents#fork-the-current-conversation): a background subagent that inherits the full conversation and works on the task while you keep working. Its result returns to this conversation when it finishes. To copy the conversation into a separate background session instead, use `/fork`. Requires Claude Code v2.1.212 or later; on v2.1.161 through v2.1.211 this command is `/fork`. When [agent view is turned off](/docs/en/agent-view#turn-off-agent-view), `/subtask` isn't available and `/fork` keeps the forked-subagent behavior |
144| `/tasks` | View and manage background work in the current session, including subagents that have finished. Also available as `/bashes` |
145| `/team-onboarding` | Generate a team onboarding guide from your Claude Code usage history. Claude analyzes your sessions, commands, and MCP server usage from the past 30 days and produces a markdown guide a teammate can paste as a first message to get set up quickly. For claude.ai subscribers on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, also returns a share link teammates can open directly in Claude Code |
146| `/teleport` | Pull a [cloud session](/docs/en/claude-code-on-the-web#from-cloud-to-terminal) into this terminal. Opens a picker, then fetches the branch and conversation. Also available as `/tp`. Requires a claude.ai subscription |
147| `/terminal-setup` | [Install a Shift+Enter keybinding for newlines](/docs/en/terminal-config#enter-multiline-prompts) in VS Code, Cursor, Devin Desktop, Alacritty, or Zed. In Apple Terminal, [enable Option+Enter for newlines and turn off the audible bell](/docs/en/terminal-config#enable-option-key-shortcuts-on-macos) instead. In iTerm2, [turn on clipboard access so that `/copy` works](/docs/en/terminal-config#enable-option-key-shortcuts-on-macos) |
148| `/theme` | Change the color theme. Includes an `auto` option that matches your terminal's light or dark background, light and dark variants, colorblind-accessible (daltonized) themes, ANSI themes that use your terminal's color palette, and any [custom themes](/docs/en/terminal-config#create-a-custom-theme) from `~/.claude/themes/` or plugins. Select **New custom theme…** to create one |
149| `/tui [default\|fullscreen]` | Set the terminal UI renderer and relaunch into it with your conversation intact. `fullscreen` enables the [flicker-free alt-screen renderer](/docs/en/fullscreen). With no argument, prints the active renderer |
150| `/ultraplan <prompt>` | Removed. Use [plan mode](/docs/en/permission-modes#analyze-before-you-edit-with-plan-mode) instead. Previously sent a planning task to a [cloud session](/docs/en/claude-code-on-the-web) for review in your browser |
151| `/ultrareview [PR or branch]` | Run a deep, multi-agent code review in a cloud sandbox with [ultrareview](/docs/en/ultrareview). Pass a PR reference to review that pull request, or a base branch or commit to change the comparison base. The preferred invocation is `/code-review ultra`, and `/ultrareview` is an alias. Includes 3 free runs on Pro and Max, then requires [usage credits](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/12429409-extra-usage-for-paid-claude-plans) |
152| `/update-config [request]` | **[Skill](/docs/en/skills#bundled-skills).** Describe a settings change, such as allowing a command, setting an environment variable, or adding a [hook](/docs/en/hooks), and Claude edits the matching [`settings.json`](/docs/en/settings) file. For options such as theme and model, use `/config` instead |
153| `/upgrade` | Open the upgrade page in your browser to switch to a higher plan tier. When the browser fails to open, the command shows a sign-in prompt without printing the URL |
154| `/usage` | Show session cost, plan usage limits, and activity stats. On a Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plan, includes a [breakdown of what counts against your plan limits](/docs/en/costs#plan-usage-breakdown). `/cost` and `/stats` are aliases |
155| `/usage-credits` | Configure usage credits, or request them from your admin, when you hit a limit. Opens your [usage-credits billing settings](/docs/en/costs#add-usage-credits-to-your-subscription) in the browser, except that Team and Enterprise members without billing access instead send a usage-credits request to their admin from the CLI, after confirming in a dialog that the request notifies their admins. When no browser can open the billing page, for example over SSH, the command prints the URL to visit instead; this requires Claude Code v2.1.205 or later, and earlier versions showed nothing in that case. Previously `/extra-usage` |
156| `/verify` | **[Skill](/docs/en/skills#bundled-skills).** Confirm a code change does what it should by building your project's app, running it, and observing the result, rather than relying on tests or type checks. See [Run and verify your app](/docs/en/skills#run-and-verify-your-app) |
157| `/vim` | Removed in v2.1.92. To toggle between Vim and Normal editing modes, use `/config` → Editor mode |
158| `/voice [hold\|tap\|off]` | Toggle [voice dictation](/docs/en/voice-dictation), or enable it in a specific mode. Requires a Claude.ai account |
159| `/web-setup` | Connect your GitHub account for [cloud sessions](/docs/en/web-quickstart#connect-from-your-terminal) using your local `gh` CLI credentials |
160| `/workflow-authoring` | **[Skill](/docs/en/skills#bundled-skills).** Load the reference for writing [dynamic workflow](/docs/en/workflows) scripts: the script API, resume behavior, quality patterns, and worked examples. Claude normally loads it on its own before writing a script; run it yourself before [editing a saved script by hand](/docs/en/workflows#edit-a-saved-script). Available when dynamic workflows are enabled, and requires Claude Code v2.1.248 or later |
161| `/workflows` | Open the [workflow](/docs/en/workflows#watch-the-run) progress view to watch, pause, resume, or save running and completed workflows |
46| Command | Purpose |
47| :----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | :----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
79| `/doctor [prompt-audit [path]]` | **[Skill](/docs/en/skills#bundled-skills).** Run a setup checkup that diagnoses issues and can fix them. Run `/doctor prompt-audit` to have Claude [audit your `CLAUDE.md` files, skills, and other configuration](/docs/en/memory#write-effective-instructions) for outdated or conflicting instructions instead of running the checkup. The `prompt-audit` subcommand requires Claude Code v2.1.283 or later.

301When a managed settings file, MDM profile, registry value, or server-managed payload fails schema validation, Claude Code first skips the individual entries it can repair, such as one invalid permission rule, with a warning for each, then drops any top-level key whose value still fails and keeps enforcing every remaining valid key.
301If your managed settings file, MDM profile, registry value, or server-managed payload fails schema validation, Claude Code first skips each individual entry it can repair, such as one invalid permission rule, and warns about each one. Claude Code then drops any value that still fails, unless the value belongs to one of the keys that [fail closed](#keys-that-fail-closed) instead.
302302
303303Claude Code is stricter with the `managedSettings` a [`policyHelper`](/docs/en/settings-reference#policyhelper) emits: it makes the same entry repairs, but any schema violation that survives fails the whole helper run, and at startup Claude Code refuses to start, the same as for a helper that exits non-zero.

A wholly invalid value is dropped with a warning, since blocking every marketplace would block sources the policy never named. |
350| `sandbox` | When one value inside the block is invalid, Claude Code doesn't drop the whole block. For what happens to each kind of invalid field, see [Invalid values inside `sandbox`](#invalid-values-inside-sandbox). |
350351| `sandbox.credentials` | A recoverable invalid entry is degraded to `mode: "deny"` with a warning; an unrecoverable one is stripped; valid entries stay enforced. See [invalid credential entries](/docs/en/settings-reference#invalid-credential-entries-in-managed-settings) |
351352
352353`allowedHttpHookUrls` and `httpHookAllowedEnvVars` merge across settings files, so entries in your user, project, or local settings still apply while the managed list is empty.
from line 357
356357`requiredMinimumVersion` and `requiredMaximumVersion` fail open by design: an invalid value is dropped rather than enforced.
357358
358359This tolerance applies only to managed settings. User, project, and local settings files remain strict: a file whose JSON or top-level shape fails validation is rejected as a whole and reported, and an individual entry that fails, such as a malformed permission rule, is skipped with a warning while the rest of the file applies.
360
361#### Invalid values inside `sandbox`
362
363When one value in your managed `sandbox` block is invalid, Claude Code doesn't drop the whole block, because it validates each field on its own. This per-field handling requires Claude Code v2.1.283 or later. On versions before v2.1.283, Claude Code drops every `sandbox` field except [`credentials`](/docs/en/settings-reference#invalid-credential-entries-in-managed-settings) when a value outside `credentials` is invalid.
364
365The warning you get for an invalid field names the field and tells you what happens to it. What happens depends on what the field controls:
366
367* If you set a Boolean key to a quoted `"true"` or `"false"`, the value counts as that Boolean. Instead of a warning, `/status` shows a notice asking you to remove the quotes.
368* If `failIfUnavailable` is invalid, Claude Code drops the value rather than treating it as `true`, so an unreadable value never stops sessions from starting across your fleet.
369* Claude Code treats every other invalid Boolean as the value that keeps the sandbox strictest until you fix it. A key that turns the sandbox or one of its restrictions on, such as `enabled` or `network.allowManagedDomainsOnly`, counts as `true`. A key that loosens it, such as `allowUnsandboxedCommands`, counts as `false`.
370* In a list outside `credentials`, such as `excludedCommands` or `network.allowedDomains`, Claude Code drops an invalid entry and keeps the rest of the list. A list that isn't an array, or that has no valid entry, doesn't apply at all.
371* While `network.deniedDomains` or any entry in it is invalid, Claude Code also withholds `network.allowedDomains`, so the managed allowlist grants nothing until you fix the deny list.
372* While `filesystem.denyRead`, `filesystem.denyWrite`, or any entry in either is invalid, Claude Code also withholds both `filesystem.allowRead` and `filesystem.allowWrite` until you fix the deny list.

220220`acceptEdits` mode lets Claude create and edit files in your working directory without prompting. The status bar shows `⏵⏵ accept edits on` while this mode is active.
221221
222In addition to file edits, `acceptEdits` mode auto-approves common filesystem Bash commands: `mkdir`, `touch`, `rm`, `rmdir`, `mv`, `cp`, and `sed`. These commands are also auto-approved when prefixed with safe environment variables such as `LANG=C` or `NO_COLOR=1`, or process wrappers such as `timeout`, `nice`, or `nohup`. Like file edits, auto-approval applies only to paths inside your working directory or `additionalDirectories`. Paths outside that scope, writes to [protected paths](#protected-paths), `rm` and `rmdir` removals targeting a [critical path](#critical-paths), and all other Bash commands except the [built-in read-only set](/docs/en/permissions#read-only-commands) still prompt.
222In addition to file edits, `acceptEdits` mode auto-approves common filesystem Bash commands: `mkdir`, `touch`, `rm`, `rmdir`, `mv`, `cp`, and `sed`. Like file edits, auto-approval applies only to paths inside your working directory or `additionalDirectories`.
223223
224Each path also goes through the [symlink check](/docs/en/permissions#symlinks), so a write that resolves outside that scope isn't auto-approved either. Paths outside that scope, writes to [protected paths](#protected-paths), `rm` and `rmdir` removals targeting a [critical path](#critical-paths), and all other Bash commands except the [built-in read-only set](/docs/en/permissions#read-only-commands) still prompt.
225
224226When the [PowerShell tool](/docs/en/tools-reference#powershell-tool) is enabled, `acceptEdits` mode also auto-approves `Set-Content`, `Add-Content`, `Clear-Content`, and `Remove-Item` on in-scope paths, along with their common aliases. The same scope and protected-path rules apply, and `Remove-Item` gets [its own check](#remove-item-in-powershell). A positional argument that contains a quote character, such as the apostrophe in `Set-Content .\notes.txt "It's done"`, still prompts even on in-scope paths, because Claude Code can't statically validate an argument whose quoted and unquoted readings differ. Pass the content through a named parameter such as `-Value` to avoid the prompt.
225227
226228Use `acceptEdits` when you want to review changes in your editor or via `git diff` after the fact rather than approving each edit inline.
from line 478
476478 * MCP tools marked [`requiresUserInteraction`](/docs/en/mcp#require-approval-for-a-specific-tool) prompt you directly even when an allow rule matches, and so do connector tools [your organization set to `ask`](/docs/en/mcp#organization-controls-on-connector-tools) in sessions where that setting reaches Claude Code
477479 * A shell command that carries [per-command allowed domains](/docs/en/sandboxing#per-command-allowed-domains-in-auto-mode) also routes to the classifier even when an allow rule matches, because a rule approves the command, not its hosts
478480 * Ask rules that match on a command's content, such as `Bash(git push *)`, fall back to a permission prompt
481 * A write that the [symlink check](/docs/en/permissions#symlinks) resolves to a protected path prompts you when the path Claude requested isn't itself protected
479482 2. Read-only actions and file edits in your working directory are auto-approved, except writes to [protected paths](#protected-paths) and [the first read outside the working directories](#first-read-outside-the-working-directories), which prompts you
480483 * In a session with [server-side classifier review](#server-side-classifier-review), read-only and [sandboxed](/docs/en/sandboxing#sandbox-modes) shell commands wait for that review and are blocked if it flags them
484 * A write inside your working directory that the [symlink check](/docs/en/permissions#symlinks) resolves to a location outside it prompts you
481485 3. Everything else goes to the classifier, apart from [critical-path removals](#critical-paths) under their default handling. The connector tools and `requiresUserInteraction` MCP tools that prompt you directly in step 1 never reach the classifier either, so neither an org-required approval nor a consent step is auto-approved
482486 4. If the classifier blocks, Claude receives the reason and tries an alternative. In most sessions the reason names the rule the classifier matched, such as `[Data Exfiltration]`, rather than giving a written explanation; see [Review denials](/docs/en/auto-mode-config#review-denials)

595599In a session started with [`--restricted`](/docs/en/cli-reference#cli-flags), which requires Claude Code v2.1.248 or later, the classifier can't approve protected-path writes.
600
601In the modes that route protected-path writes to the classifier, a write that the [symlink check](/docs/en/permissions#symlinks) resolves to a protected path prompts you instead when the path Claude requested isn't itself protected.
596602
597603[`permissions.allow`](/docs/en/permissions#manage-permissions) rules in settings files do not pre-approve protected-path writes. The safety check runs before Claude Code evaluates allow rules from settings, so an entry such as `Edit(.claude/**)` in `~/.claude/settings.json` or `.claude/settings.json` does not change the per-mode outcome in the table above. In permission modes that prompt, the prompt for a write to the project's `.claude/` folder or to `~/.claude/` can offer one of these session-scoped options:

#### Symlinks ##### How rules match a symlinked path ##### Writes through a symlink ##### Paths that can't be resolved or that change
from line 419
419419* Claude Code reads a `!` pattern relative to the current directory even when `/`, `~/`, or `//` follows the `!`, so the pattern can't reach a rule anchored with one of those prefixes. `Read(!~/notes/public/**)` carves nothing out of `Read(~/notes/**)`.
420420* A carve-out can't reopen a file inside a directory that a rule blocks as a whole. With `Read(secrets/**)` and `Read(!secrets/public/**)`, Claude Code still blocks `secrets/public` along with the rest of `secrets`.
421421
422When Claude accesses a symlink, permission rules check two paths: the symlink itself and the file it resolves to. Allow and deny rules treat that pair differently: allow rules fall back to prompting you, while deny rules block outright.
422#### Symlinks
423423
424* **Allow rules**: apply only when both the symlink path and its target match. A symlink inside an allowed directory that points outside it still prompts you.
425* **Deny rules**: apply when either the symlink path or its target matches. A symlink that points to a denied file is itself denied. For example, with `Read(./project/**)` allowed and `Read(~/.ssh/**)` denied, a symlink at `./project/key` pointing to `~/.ssh/id_rsa` is blocked: the target fails the allow rule and matches the deny rule.
424When a file path Claude requests goes through a symlink, the permission check covers two paths: the one Claude requested and the file it resolves to. This applies to symbolic links on macOS, Linux, and Windows, and to directory junctions on Windows.
426425
427On macOS and Linux, a deny or ask rule written through a symlinked directory with a `//`, `~/`, or `/` pattern also applies at the directory's real location. For example, on macOS, where `/etc` resolves to `/private/etc`, `Read(//etc/**)` blocks `/private/etc/hosts` too. Before v2.1.268, a deny or ask rule written through a symlinked directory didn't apply to a path given by its real location.
426##### How rules match a symlinked path
428427
429When a tool opens an approved file, Claude Code [confirms the path still resolves to the location the permission check approved](/docs/en/errors#refusing-after-a-symlink-changed).
428Allow and deny rules treat the requested path and the file it resolves to differently:
430429
430* **Allow rules**: apply only when both the requested path and the file it resolves to match. A read through a symlink inside an allowed directory that points outside it doesn't match the rule.
431* **Deny rules**: apply when either the requested path or the file it resolves to matches.
432
433On macOS and Linux, a deny or ask rule written through a symlinked directory with a `//`, `~/`, or `/` pattern also applies at the directory's real location. For example, on macOS, where `/etc` resolves to `/private/etc`, `Read(//etc/**)` blocks `/private/etc/hosts` too. Before v2.1.268, a deny or ask rule written through a symlinked directory didn't apply to a path given by its real location.
434
431435Grep and Glob search the directory the `path` argument resolves to. Claude Code applies `Read` deny rules to that directory.
436
437##### Writes through a symlink
438
439If the path Claude asks to edit or write is itself a symlink, the Edit and Write tools [refuse the write and direct Claude to the link's target](/docs/en/errors#refusing-after-a-symlink-changed).
440
441A write can still pass through a symlink when a directory on the way to the file is a symlink, or when a Bash or PowerShell command does the writing. For those writes, what happens depends on where the file the write resolves to sits relative to your [working directories](#working-directories) and the [protected paths](/docs/en/permission-modes#protected-paths):
442
443* **Resolves outside the working directories**: when the requested path is inside your working directories and the file it resolves to isn't, the write isn't auto-approved in [`acceptEdits` mode](/docs/en/permission-modes#auto-approve-file-edits-with-acceptedits-mode). In [auto mode](/docs/en/permission-modes#eliminate-prompts-with-auto-mode), unless an allow rule approves the write, you're prompted for it instead of the classifier deciding. The prompt names the path the write resolves to.
444* **Resolves to a protected path that the requested path doesn't name**: the [protected paths table](/docs/en/permission-modes#protected-paths) gives the outcome for each permission mode, except that where the table routes the write to the classifier, this write prompts you instead.
445
446##### Paths that can't be resolved or that change
447
448When Claude Code can't determine where a path leads on disk, for example because symlinks on it form a loop, the Read, Edit, and Write tools [refuse the operation](/docs/en/errors#refusing-after-a-symlink-changed).
449
450When a tool then opens the approved file, it [confirms that the path still resolves to the location the permission check approved](/docs/en/errors#refusing-after-a-symlink-changed).

8888**Consistency**: if two rules contradict each other, Claude may pick one arbitrarily. Review your CLAUDE.md files, nested CLAUDE.md files in subdirectories, and [`.claude/rules/`](#organize-rules-with-claude/rules/) periodically to remove outdated or conflicting instructions. In monorepos, use [`claudeMdExcludes`](#exclude-specific-claude-md-files) to skip CLAUDE.md files from other teams that aren't relevant to your work.
8989
90To have Claude check these files for outdated or conflicting instructions, run `/doctor prompt-audit` in a session. Claude reads your CLAUDE.md, CLAUDE.local.md, and AGENTS.md files, plus the rules, skills, commands, subagents, and output styles under `.claude/` and `~/.claude/`. It looks for problems such as instructions written for older models, references to files or commands that don't exist, and files that contradict each other. You get a report of findings and a set of proposed edits, and nothing in your files changes until you ask Claude to apply them.
91
92To audit one file or directory instead, pass its path, for example `/doctor prompt-audit .claude/skills/deploy`. The audit runs through the bundled `/claude-api` skill, so it's unavailable while that skill is turned off in [`skillOverrides`](/docs/en/skills#override-skill-visibility-from-settings) or with [`disableBundledSkills`](/docs/en/settings-reference#disablebundledskills). `/doctor prompt-audit` requires Claude Code v2.1.283 or later.
