Background agents are helpers that keep working while you do other things. The shortcut is `chat:killAgents`, set to `ctrl+x ctrl+k` by default.\n\n- **Proactivity level:** when Claude Code is driven by a program through the SDK, or run without its interactive screen, that program can now send a `set_proactivity_level` request. The level sets how much Claude does on its own and can move the permission mode ([what each level does](\/v\/2.1.290\/e\/new-proactivity-startup-level-gated-by-tengu-proactivity)). Switching to `proactive` this way can put the session in bypass mode when the session allows bypass, unless the request sets `offer_bypass` to false. A cloud-hosted session refuses the request.\n\n**Why**\n\nYou get a quick way to stop agents running in the background. Programs controlling Claude Code get a new setting they can change.\n\n- Area: Background Agents\n- Names: `chat:killAgents`\n- Tier: Use it now\n- Useful: 5\/5\n- Signal: 2\/5\n- Scope: individual\n- Heads-up: no"}
